An Advanced unit of Transformative Pastoral Practice requires in the participant a degree of pastoral formation and professional development consistent with the objectives of the Basic Unit (Programme 1) of Transformative Pastoral Practice. It is intended to provide continuing education in pastoral practice and social transformation, and give the opportunity for participants to extend their skills and depth their understanding of the multi–level realities inherent in their context of learning. The programme has the resources to provide advanced learning in several areas of specialisation. These may include:
* counselling and referral skills with persons and families in crisis
* through case study method specialize with one person/family or continuing situation and study at greater depth the many facets that can impinge on people's lives e.g. the social, psychological, physical, cultural, theological and spiritual
* explore and investigate methods of working for social transformation using an action/reflection methodology on local and broader issues relating to the issues of learning within the ministerial placement
* relate theological concepts to experience and learning through the facilitation of structural analysis within theological reflection at a greater depth
* reflect on the peer group process so that a participant can learn through reflection and sharing with others the dynamics of group process
* integrate the various opportunities of the curriculum into a holistic understanding of professional identity and the meaning of ministry in the urban world of today.
LEARNING AGREEMENT
The means for focusing an advanced participant's learning is his/her learning agreement. The agreement includes a clear definition of the areas of learning, an articulation of learning objectives consistent with the participant's needs and the programme's resources and how the process of action/reflection will be used in the method of learning.
The advanced participant's learning agreement includes use of pertinent literature and information media, and consultation with relevant agencies/institutions in line with the specialization outlined in their learning agreement. The development and maintenance of inter professional relationships within networks are integral to the practice of ministry. Participants engaging in the process at the advanced level are expected to work on the integration of theological knowledge and understanding of human behaviour with pastoral functioning.
The learning agreement also provides for the participant's participation in appropriate management functions and decisions within their placement if this is appropriate. It will indicate ways for evaluating the theological implications of those decisions as well as their effectiveness.
CONSULTATIVE SUPERVISION
A participant in the advanced programme will have the opportunity of individual supervision. Self directed learning will be further encouraged as he/she works with the supervisor and site co-ordinator or companion in a consultative way to enhance learning, theological reflection and professional pastoral practice.
PROGRAMME ASSESSMENT
The assessment of an advanced unit of Transformative Pastoral Practice will be based on the use of the action/reflection methodology at an advanced level. A participant will demonstrate
* how he/she has used self/reflective supervision both personally and with others
* how he/she has used psychological, sociological, cultural and theological theory and practice to ministerial situations in an integrative way
* leadership skills and confidence as a leader in the specialization undertaken in the programme.
* This assessment will take place through self-reflection and with peers and supervisor.
